interior design inspiration photos

Posted on 28. Jan, 2010 by Princess Lasertron in home, inspiration

I’ve been cutting out so much fabric today that orange is kind of starting to look pink, and grey is starting to look brown…it’s either time for a break or my brain cells are seriously dying. Today I was driving to one of my favorite stores–a very usual stop–and I got lost and had to call Dave to remind me how to get there. Duh!

This week I had my first consultation with interior designer Jessica McKay of Birdhouse Interior Design (CUTE website!) and I can’t wait to start working together on my house this week. I feel like I have a great eye for color and design and scale, but I also want to file this under “not my problem.” With my workload, other projects on the table, impending parenthood and increasing fatigue, I love that Jessica is going to take some of the pressure and stress out of decorating and give me some instant gratification.

I wanted to share some of the pictures collecting in my inspiration folder. I’m sure you’ve seen many of them around the blogosphere–it seems like so many of us have the same good taste! You can see the sources of these images over at my imgfave site.

Like blogger Jordan Ferney has talked about, one of my goals this year is to have every room in my house decorated so that I can feel happy and comfortable and content everywhere in my house. We are the couple that lives totally in the living room–we eat at the coffee table, we sit on the couch and talk after work, we watch tv before bed, I often sit in there and sew during the day–when I had my cyst rupture, we even slept in the living room for over a week! We have this whole house full of space that I don’t even like using! It’s sad!

I want to have places for things.

I want to get some art. (We have none!)

I want to paint my dressing room that dusty rose color and write on the walls. I want it to be a magical place for my daughter to try on shoes and paint her nails.

Another goal is to paint with a bold color. (Maybe even wallpaper.)

What do you want to do with your space in your deepest, wildest home decorating fantasies?

    Those pictures are amazing.
    You are always an inspiration!

I currently rent so I am always daydreaming about owning my own place and having free reign to decorate.
I would love to have a wall of mismatching frames holding all my favourite photo’s I have taken.

Great pics. That grey/yellow combo is finally starting to grow on me. I just redid my own master bedroom on the cheap. It has kind of a forties feel, with greens, golds, and a few fun and personal projects (Anything looks artful with a frame and a mat, hung in a group!). I never want to leave it anymore!

When I can afford it – walls are going black. (Even though I live in a 1830s cottage in england :-) )

I’ve done a couple of fun things with vinyl on the walls, but I want a place of my own were I can paint elaborate murals.

Can’t wait to get started on everything. I love when I get to work with people who have such great style and want to take risks.

Loving that inspiration board in the pictures. Is that a painted square dedicated to awesome stuff?! Hmm, we may have to work something like that in somewhere.

i would love to paint the walls – we live in an apartment with super high ceilings.

i would also love to take all the junk out of our second bedroom, have a place for it and make the bedroom a giant closet!

I’m in absolutely no danger of owning a home anytime in the immediate future, however I’ve been keeping an Evernote file of home design inspiration for a few years (and before that it wasin a Google Notebook, so this goes back FOREVER in internet-time).

I’m obsessed with combining the antiques I grew up around with awesome mid-century furniture & decor and setting it all against really modern colors, clean lines, everything has a place, everything else is on display.

I could easily have a house that was all shades of brown & green and mix in interesting pottery & textiles for accent color, super colorful pop-surrealist art in simple frames, lots of textures, lots of elements (metal, glass, wood, plants) & massive amounts of storage.

It was a dream of mine as a kid to have a “secret hiding place” where I could draw & read (I had a little sister so my desire for alone time was a driving force in my childhood) so if I were moving into my potential forever home to start a family in I’d definitely try to carve out a space for my kid under the stairs or in a spare closet to turn into a sort of book nook/fortress that doesn’t involve tearing my couches apart to assemble in the living room.

My ideal nursery is this: http://sewliberated.typepad.com/sew_liberated/tutorials/. I love the montessori school of thought, and the way it is incorporated in this room amazes me. So beautiful. We have a twin bed mattress on the floor for our son and I can’t wait to get back to Ikea to get some low shelving units for his toys.

For art: Have you ever attended the annual art auction at the Bemis? It is phenomenal. I’ve only been once (living in Texas makes it hard to do so…), but my brother attends annually and has quite a few amazing pieces from the auction. Info here: http://www.bemiscenterartsales.org/auction.cfm

Also–have you checked out Barcode Art? You can print them out on any inkjet printer, than piece them together. They are pretty amazing in person : ) http://www.barcodeart.com/artwork/portraits/index.html

Oh my god that is the best question ever. I’m putting it in my Facebook status and on Twitter.

I love the interior design styles that are ‘in’ right now, because I can combine my love of vintage with my love of Japanese-inspired decor, and my love of sparseness and clean lines AND my love of screaming bright colors. In any other era, these styles would not mesh, but right now, with the emphasis on upcycling and do-it-yourself and mish-mashing styles, I feel like it’s within reach.

I want to preserve heirloom furniture and dishes from my family, so I think some re-covering of antique couches with bold, funky fabrics is going to happen. But also I want a quiet bedroom space with low-to-the-ground, Japanese-inspired furniture. Mainly because my boyfriend can’t stand tall beds. He’s a mattress-on-the-floor kind of guy.

And then of course we need to work in my Fiestaware collection. ^_^

On an art note, I’ve been wanting to get a painting by Nolan Treadway recently. He’s a Lincoln artist and had a display at Nomad last summer. Diggin’ it.

I love your idea of having a secret spot for your child! I will have to file that idea away for a later date…
We have a 1300 square foot home and it’s been an absolute labor of love. Scanning Craigslist, Goodwill and estate sales (as well as some actual new purchases) has made our little house into our home. Not just grabbing the trend, but finding pieces that have a positive feeling about them.
The living room is the heart of our home and we spend most of our time in it, too.
I’m glad a friend of mine recommended your blog- nice way to start the day…
