My outfits for the Altitude Design Summit…
Posted on 20. Jan, 2010 by Princess Lasertron in business, outfit
Last week, PicScout ran a promotion giving away five free tickets to the inaugural year of Altitude Design Summit, the highly talked-about conference for bloggers and design junkies. I didn’t win the contest, but my good friend Carrie did.
And Carrie couldn’t go.
So she offered me the ticket.
I lost my mind! Within ten minutes, I was online checking plane tickets and hotel reservations.
For two hours…
and three hours…
and after four hours of scouring every travel website known to man, I conceded that it would be impossible to attend Alt Summit without spending about $1400 (including a 12-hour layover in Denver), and I really couldn’t justify the cost. There were just NO tickets.
Imagine that. I couldn’t find tickets to Salt Lake City one week before Sundance and the most hyped-up blogging conference of all time.
I admit it–I was pretty bummed. I was really looking forward to taking a mini-vacation. Away from the obligations I feel here at home to my business and my speech students and my messy house. A chance to mingle with other people in my industry who I have always wanted to meet and see a beautiful city that I had never been to.
But if there’s anything I have learned from my mind-bogglingly creative peers here in the Silicon Prairie (and from five years of running Princess Lasertron), it’s that you don’t have to be in the middle of everything to get a slice of the pie. There are parties to go to here. There are blog posts to write. There are customers to communicate with and orders to finish. There are as many possibilities in my workroom, with its dozens of bolts of candy-colored fabric and jingling jars of rhinestone baubles, as there are in Salt Lake City.
And of course there is always the AltSummit Twitter feed to follow during breaks. (Have you ever followed a conversation during a conference? It’s interesting, packed with information, and almost like being there.)
Although I’m not going to Alt Summit, I did indulge in some fantasizing about what I would pack. Here is what I would be folding into my oversized polka-dotted suitcase now!

For the plane:
Sweater: Isabella Oliver
Turtleneck: Isabella Oliver
Leggings: Topshop
Shoes: Tibi
Bag: Ted Baker
Necklace: Erickson Beamon for Target
All I need in my purse is my planner/notebook, a fistful of Stabilo pens, my iPod Touch, and a tiny travel bottle of my favorite Lolia Lempicka perfume.

Day one:
Tunic dress: Topshop
Bolero jacket: Topshop
Gloves: Merona
Tights: Topshop
Earrings: Dominque Cohen for Target
Shoes: Tibi
Watch: Michael Kors
Bag: Sara Berman
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Necklace: Cupcakes and Mace

Day two:
Wool jacket: Isabella Oliver
Turtleneck: Isabella Oliver
Leggings: Topshop
Earrings: Dominque Cohen for Target
Scarf: vintage
Sunglasses: Vintage
Bag: Sara Berman
Shoes: Nanette Lepore
Necklace: Erickson Beamon for Target
If you are going to be in Salt Lake City this weekend, whether it’s for Sundance or the Altitude Design Summit conference, have fun! I wish I was with you! Instead I am taking my speech kids to two tournaments on Friday and Saturday. That is the reality of my life. It’s not as glamorous as I fantasize, but it’s every bit as exciting and full of potential. Plus the fantasies make every day more fun.

haha the point of my post was that I wasn’t able to use my ticket because there were no flights left, but that is what I would have worn!

Great outfits, I am loving that black bag! Sorry you couldn’t find a way to make it out there. I am actually headed out the to Sundance this weekend. Luckily I booked quite awhile ago and have a free place to stay, otherwise I’d be hanging here too! Good luck at the speech tourny.

i never ONCE looked that cute one single time in all five of my pregnancies. you see….the tight fitting things came into style 5 years ago. and gap and old navy and real stores began selling maternity clothes. before that it was Motherhood and Kohls.
that’s it.
it was slim pickins and also everything was tent like.

I still feel like it’s hard to find stuff, but I think you’re right that there are so many more options. I still feel like I’m wearing a tent!
You should see my coat

Man, I wish I could have gotten tickets to Altitude Summit. The only cool thing to happen in Utah (Beside Sundance) and I can’t afford to go — even though I’m only a half hour away.
Love the outfits though!

LOVE the outfits. You have such great style. You should wear them anyway to your speech tournaments! I did speech in High School and judge every now and again around town–its so fun and it brings me back to high school–practicing my speech to the wall. Good times. Good luck to your students this week!

I’m not sure if it is too late but did you check Amtrak? I take it from Omaha to Denver all the time. I know it continues to Salt Lake.

oh man I checked EVERYTHING. With Amtrak I couldn’t afford to take that much time off because of other meetings and obligations.

I love your fashion/packing posts! They’ve helped me streamline my recent vacation planning so much.
And I love love Lolia Lempicka’s perfume. I’ve had the same fragrance for 6 years or so – ever since a sample ended up in my Sephora bag. Lucky me!
