I saw these Rosegold booties on Gilt and reloaded the page to be the first to order them–and then as soon as I put them in my cart, they were sold out. Drat!

Trying hard not to fall into the trap of buying tons of disposable plastic baby stuff–I am only buying the things I really need. A crib, a surface for changing diapers, a stroller, a car seat. What else do you consider absolute must-have big-ticket purchases?

I love these simple drawings from Krisatomic’s Daily Draw set on Flickr. This one is currently my desktop background.

Found via Paul Mathers, who puts together my favorite photo collections.

You should tell yourself this every day.

One of my favorite gifts to give is a single three-foot balloon. I hope there isn’t too much wind for my runway show this year because I want each model to carry a big armload of these! Found via Oh Joy!

Been so in love with this sheet set from Dwell. Just my colors!

These pretty Oscars look like pasta

Working hard!

i don’t know if you’ve ever seen these, but since i know you care about watching your carbon footprint, these are a nice alternative to disposable diapers (and a little less icky than full on cloth)

I am with Mom. Of all the things that we have ever bought our children when they were younger, the box it came in was the most popular. LEGO blocks and books were next in line.
Our youngest is 12 but looking back on infant years, the big ticket items were passed from the first to the last, so be sure to get things that feel good (piece of mind, safety and comfort) – it can be used for a long time and passed to others.
The most treasured were their books (board, cloth and regular bound). We loved the cloth ones because we could toss in the wash as needed. We still have some and they still like snuggling up to read them.
Have Fun!

Definitely a swing!!! I couldn’t live without it for the first few months. And a sling is awesome too. If you’re ever out shopping and don’t want to get a cart, you could put her in the sling and walk around like that. I got mine at hotslings and I still use it from time to time and my daughter is 18 months old.

YOUR favorite toy was a MIRROR.
The swing is VERY important because it keeps the child contained.
Also, a cardboard box is important.

I just wanted to mention how easy it is to wash your own diapers. And what a money saver!!!

No baby for me–just had to say, I love the picture of the heart shaped brownies! Just the inspiration I needed. Every year for Valentine’s Day, I make heart shaped food for Huz…one year was Heart Pizza, last year was Heart Shaped White Castles! This year–BROWNIES, Thanks!

I agree that cloth diapers are a must have. I use those things like CRAZY for burp clothes. Get at least a dozen so you’re not doing laundry every two minutes.
Miles really didn’t dig on his swing much. He did the first 3 weeks but it was all about the bouncy seat from there on out. I cannot recommend enough that you should have both. Because babies like options. There are cute ones that aren’t all cartoony and serve the same purpose. Also, now that he’s more “mobile” we couldn’t live without his jumper. We got a Baby Einstein one, but there are lots of options as well. He loves that thing more than me I think.

Another vote for the swing! My mom tells the tale of my miracle swing. It was so magical that it calmed me down after my first round of vaccinations when I was a wee one. The clicking can be a bit annoying, but it is worth it!
I applaud your restraint! Kids need to be rich in love, not stuff!

I had a swing for my son and he would never sit in it. Seriously, he sat in it contently maybe 7 times. He was much happier on a blanket on the floor watching the ceiling fan (there’s a big ticket item!). I didn’t use a sling ever, or a baby carrier, so I can’t vouch for those. As for diapers, if your looking for an alternative to disposable but aren’t sure if you can handle going all cloth, look into G Diapers.
I’m excited for your run way show too, and to give my son’s friends giant balloons for their birthdays – thanks for the inspiration!

That sheet set is cute! I have been eyeing a quilt just like that lately. We have a brown one but I love the mustard yellow one too.
I am so excited to see your runway show – omaha fashion week is usually in the fall, right?
Can’t help much with the baby equipment – but I think these other ladies have you covered there

Swing and Sling saved my life. Even a rocking bassinet would work though. Something so that you can take a break from the “pat and sway” every now and again and of course something to carry the baby in when you’re trying to do dishes and she just wants to feel your heartbeat.
They’re not super big ticket items, but I personally think they were the two most useful things we bought when she was newborn.

So true that a swing is a definite NEED…i couldnt have lived without my moby wrap, though! It still comes in handy even with a 16 mth old for trips and times that I dont want to deal with a stroller. My back has NEVER hurt from wearing it and my kiddo still enjoys riding around in it from time to time
I used to carry him to the store in it so i could get our grocery shopping done. He would sleep the entire time and NEVER made a sound
Also have used it for plane rides and trips to art museums

My least used item was the change table. We mainly changed her on a blanket on the floor. It was way easier and safer. But then, we are odd so…
She did love the vibrating chair. And a sort of Moses basket was helpful in those early days.

Since you’re so active, I highly recommend a swing. I stayed moving all the time with both my pregnancies and found that neither kid would stay asleep unless they were swinging.

We are using a cloth diaper service; but if you are choosing to go the disposable route, I’ve heard that you should start stocking up. Like every ‘payday’ go and grab a box of diapers. If you are wanting to do cloth, let me know, we have a great service!
Also I would recommend a sling. My older sister had an ‘over the shoulder baby holder’ and ‘wore’ her son for almost two years– it was super adorable, and really efficient when they needed their hands free for shopping, cooking, etc.

I received a table top swing when I had my fifth baby and I really liked it. It didnt take up so much space and was easy to move about the house. I also bought a baby hawk baby carrier which I still use for her at 20 months.

I wouldn’t call it “big ticket,” but my #1, most used baby item was our baby carrier (ok, carriers…i was a tad obsessed). It was indispensable for walks around the neighborhood, calming the baby when he was fussy, helping him fall asleep. My favorite is the mei tai, but the Moby wrap is also good, and ring slings are very versatile as well…
Other must-haves: Avent Isis pump, cloth diapers (even if you don’t want to use them as diapers, prefolds make the BEST burp cloths), and our swing.

I would say a baby bouncer seat of some sort. Bonus points for the ones that vibrate. Both my kids loved the bouncy and after passing it around it wore out. I need to pick one up for this baby! ack. Oh and you may want a sling/wrap/carrier of some sort if you have a baby that wants to be 2 inches from you at all times.
good luck

A swing. I think we might still have ours! I’ll look. When baby is cranky, and you and Mr. Lasertron are tired, it will come in very handy.
