polka dot house (and some questions for you)
Posted on 05. Jan, 2010 by Princess Lasertron in home, inspiration
1. Today I installed Roman bamboo shades in my new studio upstairs. They look SO cool and I’m so proud that I did it myself! I decided to move upstairs from the basement for a few reasons:
…It’s right next door to the baby’s room
…The basement is freezing
…The basement is ugly
…It’s better to lay felt and projects out on a wood floor than carpet
…Having a little less space will be a fun challenge. I think I will do a better job controlling clutter and maximizing my space usage. I know I can do it!
2. Moving things upstairs and going through all of my craft stuff, I noticed that I have a TON of polyester and acrylic felt (the kind you buy in craft stores). Now that I only use wool felt, the acrylic/poly stuff is just taking up space. I feel bad shilling it off to customers because it’s not something I like working with myself, but I don’t want to keep it knowing it won’t be used.
Would you use my acrylic felt if I cut it up, polka dotted some of it, and did a giveaway?
3. How horrified would our neighbors be if we painted the side of our house like this?

Hi – I’m megduerksen’s sister, an art teacher who is trying stitching with my students for the first time, after a very generous donation of felt from a student’s grandma last year. Donations are awesome!
Also I wanted to link you to a photo for a REAL polka-dot painted house in Detroit. It’s called the Dotty Wotty House, and it was painted by an untrained/folk artist in his “blighted” neighborhood. I just love it and would like to see it in real life someday.

The Heidleberg Project is really cool! I work in Detroit, about three minutes away from the neighborhood. The other houses in the project are really cool too, although some of them were slated to be torn down and were
There’s also another house along my route to work, still in Detroit, visable from the freeway that was decorated with mosaic tiles, mirrors and bright paint! If I have a chance, I’ll try to snap a photo- it’s really cool!
And, I’d totally do the polka dot house, if I had a house (I’m in a apt right now).

Love your work. Found your business in a recent magazine, Where Women Create. Have you very thought about writing a craft book featuring your unique work? I would purchase one of your books.

Too bad you couldn’t use the felt to make the polka dots and attach them to your new house! Velcro? Ha!

Just found your site and I am a fellow Omahan! I am just getting into felt crafting projects and am practicing on acrylic felt before I use wool. So I would take it, but I would rather see it go to the teacher above : )

hahaha I think my neighbors have come to expect stuff like that from us
we put up BRIGHT leaf green shutters when we built the house. Your new studio will be great! It is sooo much easier to get work done when you don’t have to completely separate yourself. I am excited to see how you deal with being a night owl with a kid. It was hard for me! Also, I would LOVE your felt because I love your blog and style!

I certainly wish I had a use for felt… I just don’t. I love that house, but am very partial to polka dots. I hope you post a photo of your studio and nursery

Our young artists at The Kent Bellows Studio would really love to use any extra supplies you can spare. We have a few budding textile artists! If you can’t think of a give-away, I would be happy to pick it up.
PS. I love the polka dot house idea. Perfect.l

I think the neighbors would cry themselves to sleep, but I kinda like where you’re going with that idea. It might be cool to do a tone-on-tone polka dot motif that wasn’t quite so garish (to your neighbors). You know, like your wedding dress! It would be like your whole house was Lasertron’d.

I agree with the ideas to give it to a school or art program. I run an after school program for middle schoolers. I am able to keep it free for the participants because of generous people donating their unneeded craft supplies, or other items that are garbage to them. One of my favorite creative challenges is figuring out how we can best use these items.

Schools and Daycares would love some extra craft supplies. The supplies come out of teachers’ pockets and can really add up over time.
You can call your local schools and then drop it off. No post office, no uploading for 4 hours on etsy!

GIVEAWAY!! I am using up all of my craft felt before I allow myself to purchase wool felt, so I would be happy to have a little more craft felt to practice with before buying new

well, i would love to win some felt (even it is the acrylic one), too. but i the less selfish part of me likes the school/kindergarten idea as well.
in germany we have “die Arche”, which is a great place for kids to go after school. you can read about it here http://de.dawanda.com/hilft
maybe you would like to donate your stuff to an “Arche” in berlin or find a similar organisation in your neighbourhood?

What about freecycle for the felt? Or an elementary school/church/senior home, maybe something you pass frequently.
Love the polka dotted house, go for it:).

I think your neighbors would be horrified but the house would fit your personality.
Why not do a destash on etsy for the craft items you’ve found in your supplies that you no longer want to use?
Sometimes moving creative spaces to be more convenient for you can really help. I did that with my space at my house and took over our back living room. Upside? The pups can hang out with me on my studio couch I now have room for in the room AND I can hear the doorbell ring…
Good luck on your new studio space. I’m sure you’ll make it lovely!
