Princess Lasertron (kind of) in Brides Magazine

Posted on 27. Feb, 2010 by in bouquets, business

Several months ago, Brides magazine–yes, the #1-selling national bridal magazine that you see on every newsstand in every grocery store and bookstore and kiosk–contacted me and asked me to recreate a popular bouquet I once made. The bouquet would be used in a Brides magazine photoshoot based around a Very Special Cake.

Renowned cake decorator Rebecca Sutterby (she’s been featured on TLC’s Ultimate Cake Off!) designed a beautifully detailed wedding cake inspired by one of my bouquets, and she matched the style absolutely impeccably. From little fondant buttons that looked as real as the ones I use every day to iced “stitches” around the petals of each carefully formed flower, Rebecca created the cake of my dreams for Brides magazine.

I had four days in October to recreate the bouquet and get it into the hands of stylists at Brides magazine and it ended up working out after a few all-nighters and rush orders of special supplies. Today the magazine was finally on newsstands and I opened the magazine to see Rebecca’s beautiful creation inspired by my work.

Unfortunately the bouquet I worked so hard to get to them was not pictured, and I was also not given credit for the inspiration. I am disappointed because I was very excited for this feature and I had had such a close working relationship with Brides for those weeks. I was even asked not to share pictures of the bouquet until after the magazine was on newsstands, even though they chose not to use it. But I am so happy for Rebecca and for the exposure for the design. It’s because of her immense talent that I was brought this opportunity in the first place. I still communicate with Brides editors and I look forward to working with them for several new projects in the future, including the Princess Lasertron Dress-ups dress line.

Now! I would like to show you what would have been in Brides magazine if they had used the bouquet I sent! I am so happy with this bouquet. It is the best, most careful work I have ever done. Most of the buttons are from Italy, the thread is dyed the perfect shade of blue, and it was also the first time I used those little crinkled posies and I love how they fill the bouquet out.

Around Christmas I took this bouquet apart and created headbands and fun corsage brooches using the flowers. Can’t you see yourself wearing a headband with a few of those pretty blooms with a yellow cardigan and navy blue shorts, or a striped shirt and cigarette pants? Or pinning these to a canvas tote bag swinging from your bike handlebars? I think there are such summery possibilities. Look for those in the Princess Lasertron store soon.

And if you are here because you were frantically googling for details about the mysterious “felt and button bouquet” featured in Brides magazine this month, I am your girl. This is the design I created and this is what I do. Thanks for taking the time to check me out and if you are interested in placing an order for a similar bouquet, any bridal accessory that will better suit you on your special day, or just a gift for someone who deserves something beautiful, submit your request using the Bridal Inquiry Form on the header bar up on top!

That seems less than fair on the part of the magazine! While I enjoy all of your bridal pieces, the one you made for Brides is especially attractive. It’s a real shame that they couldn’t see your creativity and attention to detail enough to use it in their feature. Hopefully they will wise up and showcase your designs in another issue. They’d be wise to not deprive their readership of your work.

I just wanted to say how admirable and mature your response was (i.e. not bad mouthing Brides). Honestly, I don’t think I would’ve acted the same way. :)

Your work is incredible, and I hope they will rectify their error … and feature your work prominently in the future. Cheers to you for acting the ‘right’ way.

I saw this over weekend when I haphazardly picked up the issue while getting my hair done. I remembered you talking about it here and how excited you were so I was sad to see you weren’t mentioned! Hopefully things come out alright and we see a Lasertron spread in Brides or another glossy wedding mag in the future. You’ve earned the honor!

It’s unfortunate that Bride’s Mag didn’t give credit where credit is due- perfect example of why those “correction” sections exist in the front of most publications, to correct obvious errors like this one. Could have easily included ONE tiny little line among all the gibberish to state who this cake was inspired by.
You should expect a real bouquet to be delivered to you soon with an apology note from Brides mag, telling you how sorry they are and what they will do to correct this situation.
I definately agree with the comment above that suggested including you in a feature about non-traditional weddings.

Anyone that knows your work will know this is inspired by you. I know how much work you put into each and everything peice that you do, so I can’t imagine how bummed you must be. Good for you for staying postive!

It is beautiful. I am sorry that they didn’t put the bouquet in the magainze. I think I need to go shopping for the exact outfit, beautiful. I can’t wait to see what else you put in the shop.

It’s a shame you didn’t get any credit for inspiring the cake, which was lovely. Almost as lovely as your bouquet. It’s breathtaking!

That being said, I would love for Bride’s to right their wrong by doing a feature on non-traditional weddings and adding you in to the mix. I’m sure that I’m not the only one to feel that way either. Not every bride likes cookie cutter weddings and Brides magazine probably knows that or they wouldn’t be reaching out to cake designers to come up with fresh new ideas.

I just picked up this magazine today and saw this article and was flabbergasted about how much it looked like your flowers. I was even going to ask you if you knew of anyone doing a cake inspired by you! I’m so sorry your name and business wasn’t referenced on something that clearly you were the inspiration for, but you were the first person I thought of when I saw it. Chin up, Zach and I will be beckoning you soon and I’m sure to let all the newly engaged women in on your crafts and services.

It’s really sad that they didn’t feature your work because the bouquet is really beautiful and it’s easy to see how much work and love has been put into it.

Oh Meg, this makes me so sad… I remember how excited you were when you were first working on the project but couldn’t tell us anything!!

That is a huge loss for their readers… I so hope they all find their way to this article!

PS – would you mind selling that whole outfit you described? ;)

Try not to be too disappointed. More than half of the CAKES that were delivered to the photo shoot did not make it into the magazine either. And my cake didn’t survive shipping — nearly all the flower petals broke off. In a rush, I made new flowers, and flew to NY in an insane 22 hour trip to fix it. I made every effort to make sure they were aware that your bouquet was the inspiration. I’m really sorry there wasn’t room for your name in print.

Ugh, I am so bummed the mag left out any credit to you! I am a magazine editor by profession, and I am surprised by this omission. Sigh. That said, congrats on being the inspiration for such a beautiful cake, and thanks for sharing your own photos of the bouquet. It is stunning.
