weekend work.

Thinking about buying…
…another desktop computer.
…a crib done!
…a changing table. They are all so ugly to me. I really have my heart set on this one that fits over my crib, but isn’t it just paying $210 for a tray??
…those cute wrap boots from Toms Shoes. My mom thinks they are horrifying but I will refer you to her shoe preferences.
But thinking about saving for…
…Omaha Fashion Week costs.
…the family vacation of my dreams–three weeks in Berlin with side trips to Copenhagen, Moscow, and Amsterdam.
…private school.

Proud of…
…my speech kids who had awesome success this weekend at their tournament. Most of the kids went on to finals and although we didn’t have any first place finishers, I think they are starting to notice their hard work paying off.
…myself for shoveling our LONG-ASS sidewalk and driveway. It was an awesome workout and I got so sweaty I laid in the snow.
…my friend Steve who is an amazing freelance design hustler speaking at conferences and writing books. I wish he got more credit for his work here in Omaha–what an awesome resource and asset he is to our community.

Looking forward to…
…getting a pair of Toms Shoes today to decorate for a fundraiser at the YP Summit. Not sure what I’m going to do yet…can’t do felt flowers because felt on your shoes is gross. Maybe some faux bois embroidery.
…seeing my (totally pregnant) photoshoot and interview in the next issue of Omaha magazine. I think it comes out this week!
…being interviewed by Leo Biga for another local publication on Wednesday.

Reading…
…Nine easy Valentine’s Day projects on Brides.com.
…The thickness of napkins–a blog post from Contrast.ie about the importance of maintaining quality in all the little details.
…Jean Paul Gaultier comes to Target–I love how Target has changed the mainstream retail marketing and merchandising game.

What’s the best thing that happened to you this weekend?

The best thing that happened to me was, I went to see April Wine in concert with my parents Saturday night. My Mom always says I should have been this age (34) in the 70’s because I love all that classic rock music now. LOL

I went to my first Mavs hockey game Friday night. It was a blast. So many families with kids. I am encouraged to take the kiddo so she can experience the excitement…move over sesame street live. I also really, really, really, like the wrap boots. Think how cute they would look embroidered!

LOVE the wrap boots!!
I would feel the same about spending that kind of money on a “tray”
The best thing to happen to me this weekend was a lazy Sunday full of laughter with my husband!

Those boots are brilliant!
Isn’t there an equally nice but cheaper version of the changing thing around? This how long you’d be really using it for compaired to what you could use the money you could save. That’s how I always think about things, saves a lot!
Best thing this weekend? Getting the rehersals underway for the production of Alice in Wonderland my friends and I are working on. So exciting to get going on it all!

As bad as it may sound now, you end up changing 90% of diapers on a blanket on the floor anyway. I would skip the changing table all together. It’s good for organizing baby things but I’m sure you can find a cuter way to do that. I think saving for private school is very wise.

This sounds wise. I’m going to push for not even getting a changing table. Thanks!

I’m not a big commenter on this site – but I absolutely love your work.
But I will give you some advice and you can do with it what you will. Forget the changing table. We had a very nice changing table that was a hand-me-down from some friends of ours and the only thing we used it for was the drawers. We had changing pads, a small stack of diapers, and some wipes stashed in the living room and den – where we were most of the time and we just changed her there. Trekking back and forth just seemed silly. We used her changing table ONE time – and we only used it then because I realized that we had never used it and we probably should.
And the best thing that happened this weekend – was an amazing day spent with some lovely ladies, vegetarian lunch at Cafe Express, a nice movie at the Angelika, and beautiful dessert and conversations on God, the Academy Awards, Relationships and Life in general at the Mozart Cafe.

Hmmm…not too much…got married and had a massage. Let my husband watch the Super Bowl even though I hate football. An average weekend, I’d say.

More mommy advice
I agree with Charli (to a certain extent) I have a small apartment so I do go into the nursery and and use the changing table every time I change my little one, it’s not far of a trek
HOWEVER the only reason is because it’s easier on my back to stand while changing her, and I don’t REALLY need it… That being said, I definitely would NOT want to move a changing table on and off of the crib every time I need to use one or the other, most of the time, you will be holding Alice when you enter the nursery, and you won’t want to set her down to situate the changing table, or remove her from the crib to put the changing table on, and then take it back off to put her back to bed… I’d say if you can’t find a changing table you like, just opt out, because chances are, you have plenty of suitable changing surfaces in your adorable lil home. Hope you find this useful

If you have your heart set on the changing tray, it would not be difficult to make. You know so many artistic/crafty people and you could add your own flair to it.

Seriously, don’t buy a changing table. You just need a surface that’s the right height (a table or preferably something useful like a low dresser) and one of those changing table pads with the sloped sides so Alice can’t roll out. If you really feel fancy get a friend to build you a low-sided tray to plop the pad onto for extra safety & some spare room at one end to stick baby wipes & powder.
MOST baby items lose all functionality (to you) as soon as the baby is a toddler and most of those things can be replaced with items that will grow with Alice as she gets older as long as you employ a little creativity. Shouldn’t be a problem for you & the professor!

I didn’t like any of the changing tables I saw either, so I just used an antique dresser with a changing pad on top. Saved a lot of money and space. You won’t want to move that changing tray every single time you need to use it.
I spent most of the weekend on the couch recovering from a sinus infection. Yuck!

Like some previous commenters, we also skipped the changing table. We found a low dresser and just placed a changing pad on top. Diapers go in the drawers and we’re set. : )
Best thing about the weekend: seeing the sun for the first time in weeks!

I am a proponent of a changing table; however, you just need the top of a dresser. You will not be moving it on and off Alice’s crib. I hated changing my daughters on the bed or floor-my back bothered me when I did.
They have pads that go on the top of a dresser-very inexpensive and totally functional. I am sure you will find a dresser that will fit your style.
Best thing about the weekend: I won 100 dollars in a football pool, and went to a lovely potluck Superbowl party.

First time poster.
I love your work and your honesty about the frustrations and successes with your business.
We had a Super Bowl party. Loved it!. Full house too!
We bought a changing table when we were preggers. I thought they were all pretty ugly too. Know what? We should have saved that money. We never used it. We always used the floor or the crib (usually the floor). We were just terrified our little rock ‘n roller would smash into the floor.

The only thing about having a tray rather than a table, there is now where to stack everything that you need during change times. I did use my change table heaps because it was easier on my back & gave me storage for nappies, wipes, etc. while they were little, but once they reached the rolling figgety stage, I mostly resorted to the floor for their safety!

I made an impromptu trip across the state to my mom’s after picking up my sick son from daycare – he got a long nap in the car, I got two full nights of sleep while Grandma took care of the little guy. My mom also finished organizing her craft room (my old room, go figure!) so we spent all of Saturday making fun things.

I have the same change table as you mentioned. But I found and brand new on ebay for an awesome price, around $60 including delivery. I found it excellent, especially in our little house, it was an awesome space saver.
But once my daughter was able to stand up in her cot it became a bit of a safety hazard, so I moved it onto the top of a chest of drawers. It was invaluable for me when she was teeny tiney, but now she’s a walking talking terrorising two year old. I don’t use it as much.

Don’t buy a changing table! Once your baby is out of diapers it become useless, but a dresser is good forever. I had a dresser that was just the right height and just bought a foam changing pad (the curvy kind with a belt so baby doesn’t fall off). I rarely changed my babies in their room anyway–we were usually downstairs in the family room or in my bedroom and I changed them on my bed.

I change an average of 24 diapers a day, give or take. I say skip the changing table; $210 can pay for a lot more fun stuff. You can purchase a ‘changing pad’ and then toss that all over the house when you need to change her. Once she is potty training age (so much sooner than you think!) you won’t be using the changing table really at all, and that $210 could have made such a pretty dent in your private school savings account.
Best thing that happened this weekend….. I had two VERY lazy days. I hear that they are numbered.

I’m a BIG fan of the changing table.
I used it for clothes and diapers and then for toys later.
The shelves were Child height and I’m sure Megan stored all her tape, scissors and PAPERS on that changing table shelf when she was older!
I used a changing table EVERY diaper change to respect the dignity of the child and give them a little privacy.
Also, the child learns what the changing table is for and how to behave during that process. No rolling around, etc.

Skip the changing table. Use a washable blanket on the floor. They can’t fall off the floor! And when they get bigger and try to roll around while you change them, you can pin them down with your leg. (Learned that from MaryMary.) I do agree to give the baby privacy and I don’t change my son in the living room, always in his room.

That squishy part inside the tray? You can buy it at Target or Babies R Us for less than $20. It’s very sturdy without the tray. Just set it on top of a dresser. That’s what I used for all 3 of mine. Ok, not so much with the first 2 (I did the floor, couch, wherever thing) but for some reason with my 3rd I used it a lot more… maybe because by the time he was born I had a 2 year old and a 3 year old and had to keep stuff out of their reach.

My sister also used a dresser with a changing pad on top, and it worked like a charm. The dresser was one we used as children and it is wider than it is tall, so it is stable and has a good sized surface. She put the extra diapers in the top drawers and hung a shelf above the dresser to hold baby powder, etc. Now that they’re out of diapers, it is the younger girl’s dresser. I can’t imagine a better solution. That said, if you’re set on the changing table, just think of it as a splurge and get it. If it turns out to be a mistake, c’est la vie. ;> P.S. I can’t wait to see what Princess Babytron will be wearing …!
