the secret room at mastercraft
Posted on 12. Jul, 2010 by Princess Lasertron in CAMP
It isn’t really a “secret room”–that’s what my mom and I call it–but when the landlord at the Mastercraft Building (CAMP’s home) first showed me his stash of vintage furniture and salvaged materials it felt like uncovering an amazing hidden surprise. Even as I type about it, I feel guilty, like maybe I ought to keep it to myself.

Vintage chairs, tanker desks, drafting tables, wrought iron piping, interesting scrap metal and wood waiting to be reclaimed. File cabinets and lighting.

I’m excited that we are using lots of the materials and finds from this room at CAMP because it deserves a good home.

We already had vintage desks and similar chairs and lockers that I had scavenged before moving into CAMP, and then our landlord took us into this back room to check out what he had for us to pick through. I was totally floored by how valuable it all is–he’d make a killing on eBay.

If you saw all of these treasures you’d just die. I think our friend Jessica McKay, who is opening Birdhouse Collective in the building, may reclaim some of the materials and pieces, fix them up, and then resell them in her showroom. Just another thing to get me excited about opening CAMP!

Oh, lord, those type- os!
Oh, I’d love to make an end table with those industrial chemical drums! I’d add a floating head and write “Trioxin” all over it a la “Return of the Living Dead”!
So pleased to see this stuff being reused! Good on ‘ya!

I would love to take some of those chairs in the last picture and paint some bright fun colors on the wood! LOVE them!

I have that desk! I got it for $30 at a university surplus sale and it’s probably the most wonderful thing in my apartment.
