Princess Lasertron at Omaha Fashion Week–some initial photos

Posted on 26. Sep, 2010 by in dresses, omaha

My Omaha Fashion Week wrap-up post will probably have to be in a few different installments. There are so many great photos that I want to share! This first one will just be a general introduction to the event and recount of the finale night. Soooo on with the pictures!

This was the third year of Omaha Fashion Week, which is hosted by local entrepreneur Nick Hudson and his team at Nomad Lounge. Over 7,000 tickets were sold to the finale show, which featured 15 local designers (including me), making it the leading fashion event in the midwest. Stand up and take notice!!

Setting up our space and getting ready backstage that morning

My favorite thing about my show was that my team was entirely made up of my real friends and family. In our group of models, we had two sets of sisters, cousins, friends–only one of whom had ever modeled before. Our stylists were recommended to me by the models and they understood my vision perfectly.

Emily, my little flower girl model, with our Princess Lasertron logo banner printed by one of my friends.

It was like a huge advantage because each person who helped me–from my assistant Shannon’s husband Greg who was on call all morning to do errands for us, to my dad who watched Alice all day, to my models and stylists who volunteered their time and effort, to my friend Steve who stuck around afterward to escort me at the afterparty–was enthusiastic about the success of the show and the success of the collection. Everyone cared. Everyone was the star. No one was “too good.” I don’t think every designer had that experience.

The day of the finale show, some models and stylists started getting ready as early as 8am. My team arrived at noon for the rehearsal and just unpacked and chatted as we waited for our turn to practice walking the huge 300-foot runway. Because we had hosted a secret show the week before at CAMP, we weren’t nervous about the styling or models. That earlier practice show really helped everything run smoothly on our end–calming nerves, determining makeup looks, and making a few final fittings. We were calm and ready all day!

I think fewer attendees than expected were able to stick around because we were all surprised by a DOWNPOUR and very cold temperatures. At one point (maybe you saw, if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook), I was begging anyone in Omaha to bring me umbrellas so I could lend them to designers who had to walk their models out through the rain to the covered runway. Happily, next year’s event will be held in August, so we can probably expect better weather.

Next time I’m going to talk about how we made the shoes, then a post about starting the line and everything we went through to begin production and order samples, and finally I’ll do a post about the process of participating in Omaha Fashion week as well as compliments about this year’s organization and suggestions to improve it. I also have a few more outfit posts to throw in here and there this week!

Thank you again for all of your awesome feedback about this line. This is totally uncharted territory for me so I am working hard to promote it in some new ways–making a look book, adding extra views and a zoom option to the dress website as well as a big button for the front of this page to take you there, and trying to think of new ways to reach new fans! Any suggestions or help you can throw my way would be more than appreciated–just click on the “connect” tab on top of this page to reach me.
