a happy lolloween giveaway!

Posted on 31. Oct, 2010 by in giveaway

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I have treats for you!

A hairbow handmade by me, a pair of pink wayfarers, a vintage brooch.

A houndstooth box of vintage fall-flavored buttons.

My favorite kind of sequin stars, vintage pom poms, and two spools of trims–antique brown seam binding and cute printed twill tape.

A matchbook pack of vintage button cards, and a kit to make ten button flower stems!

I hope you like it!

To win, leave a comment and tell me about your favorite childhood Halloween costume! Or just say anything at all. “Hi” is fine. I just like to give a prompt.

Open to international readers too–winner on Wednesday!

Finally, here are our pumpkins this year (and here are some pictures of us carving them). For her first Halloween, Alice is going to be a piece of asparagus sushi. Dave is wearing tiger footy pajamas, and I’m wearing a kimono that I got from a foreign exchange student we hosted when I was younger. Now we’re off to get free ice cream down the street and get dressed to go see grandma and grandpa!

In Belgium we don’t celebrate Halloween that much but I was in NY last weekend and i loved it! Saw some great costumes!
Such as a little black kid all dressed up like a cop and he posed very professionaly between two real cops > very cute!

I would definitely go over the top every year again :)

An Australian who has never dressed up for Halloween, but did dress up for book week (it happens every year here, all the school kids get to dress up as a favourite book character one day during the week and then there are a stack of other things on). I dressed up as Ellie from the Tomorrow When the war began series (another very Australian thing). I thought it was great because she is Ellie and I am Ellee.

I love Halloween! I think my favorite childhood costume was when I dressed up like raggedy Anne in grade 3. I haven’t had a good Halloween since then. Year after year they’ve gone from bad to worse. I’m hoping next year the curse will be broken

I wish I had something really creative to say I went as for Halloween, but I nearly always wanted to be a cat. I grew up in a crazy, sometimes lonely, old farmhouse filled with cats – I think we had about 14 at one point.
Now that I’m an adult I’d never want to live with so many, but as a child those creatures were my very best friends in the world. So yeah, Halloween was that one day of the year where no one was gonna tease me for meowing & wearing kitty ears.

Growing up in Oregon where it notoriously rained on Halloween so you had to collaborate your costume around a raincoat – and your candy could often stain your pillow case because it melted – those memories stick with me the most.

When I was about 6, I wanted to be super woman really really badly. But, the costume company sent an angel costume instead; thus I was an angel for Halloween. My mom made me a really awesome halo that connected to my wings so it appeared to float and the wings were huge and had feathers glued all over them. I made myself a harp that matched all of it – we were all soooo proud. But, being a stubborn 6 year old I didn’t want to wear my rain coat and needless to say, it poured. Like, rivers down the street, poured! My costume was falling apart in about an hour so we went to the local fair instead. A slightly tragic end to a 6 year old’s Halloween, but I remember that one the most!

She-Ra! I lived in Bermuda at the time, circa 1985 and I won a prize in the school costume contest (a sweet book about a fluffy bunny). However t’was my mom that deserved the prize. She stayed up til the wee hours the whole week: spray painting cardboard in gold, sewing, and meticulously gluing iridescent sparkles.

hi! my favorite costume was in fifth grade and i dressed up like a clown. instead of just buying a wig, i decided to go all out and spray my hair this awesome hot pink color. unfortunately, well actually fortunately, the color wouldn’t come out of my hair, so i sported this lovely pale pink shade of hair through the new year. at the time, i was mortified, because i was already a lil’ bit dorky, but now i realized i was just a few years ahead of the trend :)

My mom always made me great costumes (but then I would be upset the next year when she made me wear it again b/c she couldn’t sew 3 new kids costumes every year!) My most memorable is the cheerleader costume. Blue and white skirt and one of my white sweaters with a big A on it.

I think the year my ma made a clown costume, was the best. Even though I dont like clowns as an adult, that was the coolest costume. She dyed a mop head orangish yellow for my “hair” for that costume and that was cool (to me!)

We didn’t really do halloween growing up, but I did a lot of dance recitals. My most memorable costumes was from when I was 5 or 6 and I got to be a rooster. The other girls were all chickens but I got to be the rooster because I apparently knew what I was doing more.

My Mom had a thing with scary costumes, and I wasn’t allowed to be anything scary- EVER. So one year she made me a lovely long red plaid flannel nightgown, and I was supposed to put my hair in pigtails and carry my pillow and be a “sleepover girl”. I was 10 and done with cute. I left the house, went to a friends house and put on blood and cuts all over my face. Ta-dah! DEAD sleepover girl! Victory!

My first Halloween that I had a say in what I wore, I asked my mom if I could go as a snake. She asked how I would do that, and I said, “I’ll put both legs in the same hole in my jeans.” Thus fusing my legs together in a snake-like fashion. When she asked how I would go trick-or-treating as a snake, I got into my “costume” and showed her how I’d wiggle around and go up and down stairs. Needless to say, I did not get to be a snake that year!

I was just telling a friend that I always feel like such a cheater come Halloween… My Mama would lovingly spend hours, stitching, gluing, and embellishing costumes for me and my sisters. Now that I am a mama I tend to go the “store bought, and then improved by diy accessories” route when it comes to costumes for my kiddos. However, while my memory is filled with adorable costumes from my childhood… I had the cutest little robot and parakeet on the block this year! :)

My most memorable halloween costume was the year i was….nothing. LOL. I lived in North Texas at the time and the weather is super duper unpredictable and I had the cutest lil Minnie Mouse costume, but it snowed 2 feet on October 30th, so needless to say, my momma wouldn’t let me wear it. I ended up having to be an “eskimo” because I had to bundle up every time we stepped out of the house! LOL

I lived in the Philippines when I was little, and my mom made the most amazing bee and spider costumes for my sister and me. We were maybe…eight and three (I’m older). We lived on base and my parents felt safe letting us trick-or-treat on our own, so I TOTALLY took advantage of us this and kept my sister out well past 11 PM. We hit damn near every house on base and played tag in the dark jungle (just the outskirts, jungle was huge). Surprisingly, I don’t even remember getting in trouble when we finally ambled home. I just remember the perfect weather, the excellent costumes, and the sweet freedom to do whatever we wanted in what must have been one of the last fear-free times for any parent.

Like Toyah (comment above) I grew up in Europe and Halloween just was not such a big thing. When I moved to the USA I was quite taken aback by the sheer magnitude of the holiday here. I carved my first pumpkin two years ago at the request of my friends two year old and had a blast…. the toasted pumpkin seeds were an added bonus.

My mom used to make my halloween costumes, and my childhood favorite was the year I went as a rainbow. She made a little dress from striped fabric that I wore with colorful tights and a cloud shaped hat.

Later in high school I was a hersey’s kiss – hula hoop on suspenders, tin foil covering up to my neck with a little headband with the “Hersey’s Kisses” tag

I clearly like a little hat action with my costume – which is why I would love to win a new hair bow! Fingers crossed

One year for Halloween I was a monarch butterfly. I had issues with Halloween because I refused to wear masks or face makeup. It’s extremely limiting as a child when you won’t do either of those two things. I was a princess SEVERAL times, but the butterfly stands out to me!

Halloween isn’t big in Australia, but we do love our costume parties. My favourite costume ever is probably the Disney Muse (from Hercules) I went as to a friend’s Disney-themed 18th. One of my brothers went as Jafar. If the link works: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=8498261310&set=t.519689984

It’s only been a few years, since the Halloween fever hit Belgium. So when I was a kiddie, Halloween was something totaly unknown… But we had carnaval! Then, every year, we could go all dressed up to school and there would be a prize for the best costume.

When I was 7, my mom let me choose a costume out of a carnaval magazine and she would make it for me. Out of a selection of witches and monster costumes, I went for a hawaiian outfit. It ended up being an orange top with purple fringes (?!) a straw skirt and flowers in my hair. I used that costume year after year untill it was way too small! I never won, but every year, I felt sooo happy in my little hawaiian outfit, that I couldn’t be bothered about the contest :)

I’m so looking forward to see pics of your Hallloween costumes!

ok, so i have to say that even though i got made fun of, my fav costume is still the one year i dressed as a PICNIC.

i wore a huge cardboard box with my arms sticking out the sides, and my head out the top.

the box was covered in a checkered tablecloth, and i spent days cutting out food photos and pasting them onto paper plates, and glueing the plates, cups and cutlery onto the ‘picnic blanket’. i wore a hat that i stuffed fake flowers in the top of, so i could be the centerpiece. i believe i even drew little ants crawling on the tablecloth!!!

a very clever and cheap costume, but it was a little tricky walking through doorways :)

    hi!
as a kid, my most memorable halloween costume was the year i was a witch. My mom teased my waist-length hair and “dyed” it black with that spray-on color. Then she crafted me a nose out of putty and painted my face green.
But I think the best part of that halloween was that my dad came and picked us kids up from my mom’s and took us trick-or-treating in her neighborhood. So I got to spend halloween with both my parents and there was no bickering or fighting or pettiness that came with my parents’ divorce.

I think I was about 8 or 9 years old. My mom was the best at dressing us up in spooky costumes. In a rush after school to get all three of us dressed and out the door I didn’t even get a chance to check myself out before I hit the street. I was a car crash victim. About 10 or so houses down the street I got a glimpse of my reflection in a door and the sight of me was so shocking that it scared the pooh out of me and all I wanted to do was go home and get out of my costume. Needless to say it was a memorable Halloween! :)

I remember dressing up as a fairy princess–I was maybe 6 or 7, and my dad helped me make a wand and tiara out of tinfoil.

A year or 2 later I got a Belle costume, which my sisters and I wore to shreds!

When I was *really* small (maybe 3-4), my whole family dressed up as clowns! Red foam noses and all. We have pictures to prove it. :D

    Hi there,

    what a great giveaway!

When I was little there was nothing like Halloween in our area. It swapted over the last years though. We started with craving pumpkins already like 10 years ago and were the first in our street. The last two years were my first to dress up and they were both as star wars ones. So I’m still in finding some cool costumes and more in the kiddie mode on it…

Hope you had a great spooky one,
