“What kind of person has a favorite adhesive??!?” …Fabri-Tac and me: a love story

Posted on 26. Jan, 2011 by in craft

Buy a kit, get some glue. What a deal, right!?!?@?!?

In pretty much every photo of me working, you can see a bottle of Fabri-Tac glue near me, its red cap sticking up through the scraps and piles like a beacon in the mess of my work table.

I use it in almost all of my projects–it bonds instantly and you only need the tiniest bit of it. One of my secret techniques for making the bouquets (here it comes!) is dabbing one thin, tiny dot of Fabri-Tac between each layer of felt before I stitch it. It keeps each layer of material from sliding around as I add it to the next. If I have to set a flower down and come back to it later, nothing has been moved or messed up. And most importantly, it doesn’t soak into the fabric or leave a mark.

When I started fabricating my Felt Flower Bouquet Kits a few years ago, I originally wanted to include a bottle of Fabri-Tac in each box because it’s so important to me as I construct all of my work and I wanted to share it with all of my customers. I decided it would put the kits out of the price range that I was comfortable with, but I still often think of it.

I talked to my friend Karen at Beacon Adhesives, creators of Fabri-Tac, and told her about how I always thought about doing that, and she offered to send me 8 bottles of Fabri-Tac for the next eight people who buy a kit.

When I mentioned this little promotion on Twitter, my friend Alan said he thought it was funny that I had a favorite adhesive. Everyone should. So if you want to try my favorite (and have been looking for a fun project), it’s a great time to buy a kit!

My search for Testors No. 3522 took me over a month and to a dozen stores.

    Inadequate adhesives are….inadequate.

Love fabri-tac, but have acrylic nails…the glue eats them. Must wear gloves!

Thanks for the tip and for asking Beacon! I tried it last night and it seems to work at a 45 degree angle… I just have to remember to be precise like that and I’m golden!

I find it funny that you mention Fabri-Tac. I just bought some last night to glue patches onto Tyler’s karate uniform. I hope it holds up to may washings.

that is cool! fyi, if the patches have gum on the back of them, the fabri-tac won’t work because it needs to adhere to fabric fibers. but if they’re just woven, it’ll work perfectly! congrats to tyler. :)

I use fabri-tac as well, and I have the same problem with it always turning into a little glue volcano. Haha.

Anyone who uses adhesives on a regular basis knows it’s essential to have a favorite! I’m also a big fan of fabri-tac. My one issue with the glue is how messy it can get- everytime I use a bit of glue the bottle just keeps on spewing even after I’ve put it down! Maybe it’s the types of chemicals they use? Who knows… but if you have any tips on preventing such explosions, I’d be interested to hear!
