style resolutions no. 1: experimenting with jewelry
Posted on 11. Jan, 2011 by Princess Lasertron in outfit
There are a handful of style statements that I have always been a little uncomfortable with or afraid of, and one of my goals this year is to confront all of those apprehensions and challenge myself to take my wardrobe where it’s never been before!

My friends and I went to get some cupcakes at Jones Bros during happy hour (three minis for $2!) and took a few snaps of my outfit. I never, ever wear jewelry, except for a big signature necklace occasionally. When done well, I love the way other people look with their wrists stacked with cuffs and neck dripping with gold chains, fingers encrusted with vintage baubles…but whenever I do it, all I see is “trying too hard.”
So this might be trying too hard. But at least I tried! That’s the first step to figuring out a new style, right?

The garish look may be considered trend, but I think your first instinct was right. It’s good to hesitate and think first.
The twenty-first century seems to be a period where everything that was worthwhile is now lost. Like, common sense, innovation (tasteful), jobs, planning for the future, the dollar, morals, caring about each other, a viable government, greed gone sour and lest I forget… beautiful jewelry!
As a woman who wanted to preserve the vintage variety, I like the multiple bangles look, but where is the quality?
Miriam Haskell would turn over in her grave is she saw the replications of her unique and elaborate style. It looks like hardware. There is no essence, intelligence or taste in most of fashion today to include garment styles which appear rediculous and do nothing to flatter the woman.
Impeccably dressed people are bypassing the jewelry, and I would agree that nothing looks better than something cheap and ugly.

I tend to think lots of jewelry or big jewelry works best when you’re wearing simple patterns or plainer clothing. Jewelry makes a statement, but I think in this case it’s being drowned out by the other big patterns you have going on. Next time, try big jewelry, polka-dot belt, and a solid colored shirt.

i usually try to balance my jewels i’ll wear a big ring and a big headband or necklace with a bracelet but i usually don’t wear it head to toe. i think it was coco chanel who said when you think you’re outfit is done take off one thing.

You look very cute. I especially love the the bracelets. (I have the one from Forever 21. Don’t you love it there. Such cute, trendy, cheap stuff that I always get compliments on.) I I love big rings but I have come to the decision that one on each hand works the best. But you should do what ever you like. Who cares. For the most part, other people are more concerned about how they look than how you look. I also love your hair. It look really cute in these pictures!

I think it’s an easier “not trying too hard” look when you do go big but in one focal point. Instead of lots of necklace, lots of bracelets, lots of rings… go big in one area!

I love the gold-tone jewelry you’re wearing. I think it really compliments the flower pattern of your top.
I do think the other jewelry (that is, everything that’s not gold-tone) is too much. It says more punk style to me, like someone in a band. For my taste, leaving that off would’ve been the perfect statement without being too bold.

I think a big signature necklace works well on you. If you have a cool piece of jewelry that really stands out, you should showcase it! You don’t necessarily need to just keep piling on.
Just so I don’t seem snotty, that comment is not a knock at the pics you posted. The pics look fun! I like playing around with jewelry. If I could offer constructive criticism, I would say that all of the jewelry plus the busy pattern of the dress and belt makes for a whole lot going on, and I could see some people thinking it’s too much. If you like it though, who cares?? But you may want to also try wearing solid colors so that the jewelry really speaks more on its own and is complimented by the clothes instead of just becoming part of the outfit.

that makes sense! I thought taking it over the top was better than not enough.

I have always liked your signature style of one statement necklace. I think this is too much jewelery to wear at once.

Because this is a trend I’m seeing everywhere and the stuff is readily available, I’ve been wearing it alot more. I’m loving wearing a chunky necklace (maybe layered with another necklace or scarf) and the big rings. But if I had to hunt around for them, it probably wouldn’t happen. But I’ve always been into earrings and bracelets.

I love your necklace! I’m also trying to be more adventurous with my clothes this year, and I’m blogging about it too – another way to get creative and feel good!

I’m the same – when I look at myself in the mirror, the jewellery just looks… messy… and the wrong size… and unflattering… and, besides, it’s constantly catching on things or getting in the way or weighing me down. But I really WANT to be good at wearing it!
