giveaway week: learning

Posted on 30. Jun, 2011 by in Uncategorized

It’s giveaway week! I’m excited about these little prizes I’m giving away each day because none of them are sponsored or planned out–each package mailed out after this week will be full of hand-picked items chosen by me. Things that mean something to me and that I want you to have! Today’s prize is inspired by the theme of “learning.” The winner will receive a package of supplies and items that I hope can teach you something! Comment below to enter and win.

Top 5 things I want to learn this year:

1. How to say the right thing

I think that one of my strengths is taking charge and sharing my opinions with others. Once I decide how I feel about something, I always want to let everybody know and convince them to take my side. I’ve learned that there are some good and bad aspects to a skill like that–on one hand, I handle confrontation well and people can always be confident that I’m telling the truth. On the other hand, I can come off as bossy or aggressive and sometimes my candor turns people off–especially when I haven’t thought the issue through. Another skill I have is moving quickly when I decide on a course of action, but that also leads me to a lot of impulsiveness.

Because of my job, I’m often in the position to convince somebody to sponsor an event (such as our Omaha Fashion Week afterparty or Barcamp Omaha), teach a technique to a large group (through a crafting conference like The Creative Connection), or speak about my experiences (for example, in front of a marketing class at UNO or at an event with community peers in business). I hBave to be more careful not to speak too impulsively and to think about the best way to reach my audience, whether it’s a one-on-one client meeting or a speech.

2. Bookbinding

Self-publishing is one of my mom’s interests, and I sort of got into it growing up because she had so many books about binding, printing, making cute little pamphlets with special folding tricks. I often think about what cute, creative marketing material I could make if I knew more about binding and I’d love to pursue that soon.

3. How to make a cute pillowcase dress for Alice

It’s the easiest thing ever and I have a stack of little vintage pillowcases just waiting to be ruffled and sewn into little baby clothes. Prudent Baby has some of the best tutorials.

4. Something from each of my friends

I want Emma to teach me how to do the chain stitch without passing the needle through all the fabric. I want Peter to teach me how to round the edges of a table. I want Jessica to teach me how to choose wallpaper. I want Shannon to teach me now to french braid. I want Eric to teach me how to order stickers. I want Rahul to teach me more about the traditions he and his wife teach their kids.

5. How to swing a golf club

I can’t believe that I can’t do this.

What did you learn today?

I want to learn to make fresh salsa. And a lot lot lot of other things. I am starting my MSW this August and am excited for all of the learning I will do…and the fact that I will not be working crazy hours every week like I did in undergrad, which will allow me more extracurricular learning time.

I’ve finally learned that sometimes making “to do” lists isn’t enough, that sometimes you have to pull up some slumbering courage to make both the big and small things on that list happen.

Today I learned that days away from work are priceless–they are meant for focusing on dreams and playing in the sun. After a day where I didn’t think about work one time, I feel so refreshed and motivated to chase my real dreams–to lose my 9-to-5 and go after my real small business aspirations.

i learned that if you create a fake fb page to play fb games on you can send game requests like CRAZY and get them back and no one gets mad about getting too many fb game requests. i am probably really slow to this realization but it’s changed my life a little bit for the better :) haha

I learned that my son has a double ear infection. Dr. says it is not a super bad one, but just starting. I feel terrible for him, but I feel so great that I can tell when he’s starting to get sick. It is for sure a time when I feel like I’m being a great mom!

    4. learn how to sew clothing (I’ve mastered quilting!)

My husband and I have been married for 2 1/2 years and are moving from our college town in just a few weeks. So in preparation for our move across the country I’m learning how to let go of things but ultimately I’m learning the art of yard saling! (that’s not a word)

I am learning quickly that items that are worth a lot to me, may not be worth as much to others. I’ve done my research though and am pricing things as fairly as possible.

Something I’ve learned is that preparing for a yard sale is beyond just pricing things. It’s exciting to keep learning new things, no matter how simple or mundane they may seem. I’ve been out of school waiting for my husband to finish, and I’m antsy to continue my learning!

I am learning Greek. My fiance is Greek and I want to be respectful to his family when we go visit them in Greece. I don’t have any deep ties to my heritage and am not close with my family, so it’s really special for me to get to become a part of a family with traditions and pride in their heritage. I’m using Rosetta Stone, the book my fiance’s mom used to learn Greek when she married his dad and just trying to speak it with his family as often as I can. The most important thing for me has been not being embarrassed when I can’t speak it well or mess up. I can’t learn if I don’t mess up!

I also REALLY want to learn to garden. I want to grow my own herbs and vegetables, but I seem to kill every plant I touch. Even my dear old cactus! There’s a nursery in town that I plan to become a regular patron of, and the people there are very knowledgable. Hopefully they can turn my thumb green.

I just read a tutorial on how to sew a cute diaper holder/case that I plan to make for some of my friends that are new mommies. So even though I haven’t sewn them yet, I learned a little by reading through the tut first!

This year I hope to learn how to fully, truly relax at will.

I didn’t learn anything new today but my 8 year old has informed me that she wants to learn how to knit. How awesome is that??!?! So knitting is in my future!

I WANT to learn to knit. I try and try and I just can’t get it. I just need “The LIttle Engine That Could”‘s mantra :)

But I DID lean yesterday that deer and moose shed their antlers. I always thought they just grew them large. Apparently every January they break their current antlers off and grow new ones. I really thought I knew all there was to know about animals. I’m a vet tech for pete’s sake!

Don’t laugh but today I learned that breastmilk spit up is stinky. I stay at home with my 3 month old daughter and surprisingly this is the first time she has ever spit up.

I also read two more chapters in Eugene Peterson’s memoir on vocation but I am still processing what I am learning from that about my own vocation.
