our annual reader survey giveaway winner, our birdcage veil class, and some new pictures

Item One
This year 349 of you responded to our reader survey, up more than 100 from last year. I LOVE feedback because I am the kind of person who is always driven to improve. I love to re-evaluate my plans and results to figure out the best courses of action, and I could never do this effectively without such a supportive reader base. Thank you!

From a cursory glance over the results, here are some of the more surprising findings:
…Most of you have been reading for 3+ years which I never expected. That says I have really loyal readers but maybe aren’t as good at attracting new ones.
…You like baby-related posts more than I thought. (I will direct you to AliceElfie.com…I try not to make this a mommy blog unless the baby post is relevant to the rest of our content.)
…I’d really like a little more feedback about how you like the “featured post” on top, and the past posts as a grid underneath. Using that format took some convincing on the part of my graphic designer and I’m still a little skeptical that blog readers will accept that format when hardly any other blogs use it.
…The #1 thing you want to see more of is my husband.

After I analyze the whole thing I’ll make a more in-depth post about that and what we plan to do with the information!
P.S. The winner of the Favorite Things giveaway who took the time to fill out our survey is Katy from Provo, Utah!

Item Two
Anyone who signs up this weekend for our felt flower fascinator headband/birdcage veil online class (and tells me so) will get 50% off the class kit. I’m making each one myself and they are $30 each, and will be available in our shop after the class starts. So if you sign up this weekend, let me know, and I’ll give you a coupon code to get the kit for $15! I’ll throw in a few little extras with your package as well.

Remember, the way this online class works is when you sign up you get access to a how-to video to “play along” with me as I make the project with you. You can pause it, rewind it, restart it, and replay the video as many times as you want. And you get to see if I accidentally swear. It’s really worth it. It’s also open to international students.

Item Three
I’m making cake toppers now. Look at this one for my friend Lesley who is getting married today!

Ok since you are responding to most of the comments here, I am dying to know; where do you get all your buttons?! I am a button fanatic and use them to embellish handmade clothes and hats. Don’t worry, I’m not planning on ripping you off, but you’ve got to share the secrets of finding buttons!
Also, I think the reason I don’t LOVE the format is because I access it from my iphone a lot and it’s such a pain to go back and forth instead of just scrolling. I like it a lot when I’m on my desktop though.

hi emily! I get all of my buttons at flea markets and antique stores–i wish I had a more reliable source but I think the thrill of the hunt and the rarity of the materials add so much value.

It’s so interesting to hear the feedback from everyone else! I don’t know if I said I wanted to see more of the Mr. or not, but, I totally do. You guys are the cutest. And I recall reading Prof Lasertron posts in the past that were pretty hilarious.
As for the format, I like it, but I also don’t use it because I read through bloglovin and so I only read the newest posts as they’re posted.
Congrats to the winner – I’m jealous!

About the grid format: I loooove it, but when I tried to add grid formatting to Offbeat Bride last year, readers fucking rioted. People complained about having to scroll past the gride to “get to the real posts” and just did NOT understand the format. I ended up reverting, but with some resentment. I love the look, and wish readers weren’t so resistant to daring design.

readers can exude HUGE pressure–sometimes the noisy minority bullies me into doing things I don’t want to do aesthetically. trying to resist.

I’ll admit the format was not my favourite at first but it really has grown on me a lot. I wish there was a page link to something like a ‘blog archive’ though, sometimes just the last few blog links aren’t enough and it is hard to find things further back.

I honestly, really don’t like the format. I enjoy being able to see all your posts in one place.
Oh and I love Alice’s site! I’ve been following since she was born.
and something I wrote in my survey answers, was that I wanted more helpful hints about sewing (etc) and I’m SO excited for your class! That definitely fits what I was asking for! I’m even more excited that you’re going to sell kits for it!! Can’t wait!!

Soooo, I may be missing it, but where is the “follow” button on aliceelfie.com’s tumblr??
I love the format of the blog so much more than scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, but also agree that within the individual posts a “next” and “previous” would be great!

Your question about the format of your site led me to another question–do most of your readers read directly on your site or use a RSS feed?

I personally like the layout of the blog. At first I wasn’t a huge fan, but I do like it now. I think it makes everything look clean and streamlined.
Also – I signed up for the class yesterday – could I still get the discount? I was planning on going out and buying all the materials, but I’m not familiar with my area at all as I just arrived in Tampa – and a kit would be SUPER helpful.
Anyway – keep up the good work. I’ve been reading for a couple of years now and love just about everything about your blog.

hi meg! I really want to sign up for the bird cage veil class but have a couple of questions. 1) I sign up for the class for $35, and then do I sign up with you for a separate kit for the class? 2) Do I need a sewing machine?
thank you

Hi Emily!
The class is $35.
You can source the materials yourself, get creative with craft stuff you have on hand, or buy my kit. most people I expect to source materials themselves.
You need a sewing machine but you can skip that step if you’d rather hand-sew.

I’m a Katy, but sadly not the winner. I’m a little surprised by the results too, but mostly because I must be a very stereotypical reader. (3+ years, already follow Alice’s tumblr {which by the way, doesn’t properly link over with the www in front} and WOULD love to see more about your relationship with Mr. Lasertron!)
With regard to the layout- I did mention that I don’t particularly like it, but it doesn’t prevent me from using it. Its more like a game, in that, I try to read every new post as soon as possible so I don’t have to go down to the bottom and click around from post to post. I guess what I would really like, is if you have each post separate, leave an option to go to previous entries, so you don’t have to go back to the main page to see the next one…does that make sense?
I love to see your business expand, so cake toppers is a GENIUS idea.
Keep up the amazing work Megan!

Um are you crazy? this blog format is the best I’ve seen yet!! I love the grid format. It’s very symmetrical which I love for blogs because its so much easier to read and follow along. Scrolling down forever is so passe!
Anyways I just signed up for the class… wasn’t sure how to tell you so I could also get the kit for that really awesome price! So pumped about it!!

I think your format makes it easy to scan over the posts to see what’s new. Also you blog about various different subjects, so I can pick and choose if I’m in a hurry – not that all your posts aren’t lovely! As Sarah said, it makes your site feel more like a magazine, which personally I like

I like the format – it makes your site feel more professional, like a magazine, rather than just one more crafty blog; on the other hand, it’s so pretty it does feel relaxed and personal, not just an advert for your shop. I think your designer did a great job.
