some new old things

The vintage stores around Spirit Lake, Iowa are just the very very best. It’s hard to find shops around Omaha that aren’t picked over, but the little thrift and antique shops along the highways in Iowa are always full of treasures.

My partner Sarah and I have been combing these stores for special pieces for our Hello Holiday inventory, and in the endless search I can’t help but pick up a few things for myself once in a while.

First, my favorite–this old chenille hooked blanket that I’ve had my eye on for about a year now. It came down in price from $70 to $14 so I felt like it was my time to buy. I love the pom pom fringe, too. Right now it’s on Alice’s bed.

The Carmine Red pencil–a favorite of cartoonists, copywriters, and used in classrooms for decades. The academic in me couldn’t resist a fresh, unsharpened box.

My favorite teacher in high school had a wallet full of keys, and I lost one of them twice when he gave them to me to open doors on the stage when I was the technical director for plays. This was cheap, and unopened, and special, and it brought back some nostalgia for those times. If I don’t use it, I think it’ll make a good gift for my brother.
