today’s outfit and a speaking engagement thursday
Posted on 22. Jun, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
It’s been a long time since I did one of these! Not because I’m not feeling totally cute…but because I pretty much wear the same thing every day which doesn’t make for good posts. Nursing tank top, tunic, leggings. Nursing tank top, cardigan, skirt. Nursing tank, vest, leggings. Random jersey dress. Story of my life these days.

It is harder now to dress than it was before–nothing really fits, my hips are too wide, my boobs are too big, whatever. I felt pretty cool in this outfit when I had it on but now I’m not sure. I think it’s the hat. It’s hard for me to feel confident in hats. (And what about hair? Do I do a ponytail? A low bun? Leave it down? I just want to avoid looking bald, as I do in these pictures…)

Finally, Eric Downs and I are speaking about our new coworking venture, CAMP, at Cornstalks at the Omaha Chamber this Thursday. It’s at 1301 Harney St. Drinks and snacks will be served at 6:30 p.m. and we’ll be speaking around at 7:30 p.m. It’s very casual–come early, come late, whatever.
If you have had questions about coworking, how we started down the road of starting CAMP as a new business, or anything else I could answer, leave a comment. I’m working on my presentation today and it would give me some good jumping-off points.
So anyway if you’re local and you care, I’d love to meet you at the Omaha Chamber this Thursday night. Eric would want me to point out that you should come, if only to meet him.

today’s outfit and venturing out
Posted on 17. May, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.

Sitting on the couch feeding Alice for like every 25 seconds for the last few days made me decide that it’s time to get a laptop. If you’re one of the people who are waiting for an e-mail from me, you probably agree.

Dave and I packed up a little bag and took Alice to the store and looked over some options. I ended up with a slick little HP–I admit I chose it for looks but it got good reviews. I will be able to get more work done with an infant now, and I wanted a laptop for CAMP anyway–it’ll be nice to have when I start working away from home.
I love this dress and it’s kind of the only thing that fits me, so don’t get too excited about new outfits. Bummer that I cant nurse in it!

Alice was so good at the store! I held her in a wrap and she never fussed. It seems like she is turning out to be nocturnal like her mama. We’ll see how long that lasts–I don’t know her very well yet!

today’s outfit and week 40
Posted on 06. May, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
Thanks everyone for your sweet feedback on my last post. It felt good to get that out there and it feels great to think of the love that’s coming this baby’s way! I am feeling more and more like she’ll be here on Mother’s Day (my birthday) this Sunday.

I really didn’t want her to be born then–I’m a little possessive of that day. The whole month, actually (I do celebrate a “birthday month”). But as my mom always reminds me, “‘YOUR’ days are OVER.” While laughing maniacally.

Yesterday, my friend Eric and I went to Jones Bros Cupcakes, the newest bakery in town. They did a hush-hush soft opening on Saturday and sold over 2,000 cupcakes!

My initial impressions were extremely positive–Jones Bros has that beautiful stark, minimalist architecture that I love so much, and they also used some of my favorite typefaces (Neutraface, Archer, and something that looks like Hand Writing Multu) in their branding. No detail was spared–the scalloped circle imagery was found on top of each cupcake, on all of the signage and paper products, and even the coffee stirrers and tabletops (which were obviously custom-cut).

I ordered cinnamon sugar, red velvet, chocolate, and carrot cupcakes and they were given to me in an adorable box. I also had a hot chocolate that came with a delicious, generously sized homemade marshmallow. The details!!

Eric and I were grateful to sit down with two of the Jones brothers themselves and talk to them about their branding and buildout process (since we are going through that right now with CAMP), and they also shared some wisdom about the bumps and setbacks they hit along the way. I was more surprised to learn that this is the Jones brothers’ first venture in the food industry, considering how well-thought-out the whole experience was.

I’m excited to go back to Jones Bros Cupcakes and try more from their menu. I can also see it being a great meeting place throughout the year as we plan events and parties!

maternity fashion: dressing when pregnant
Posted on 25. Apr, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
Q: What is your advice for dressing well when pregnant? (Via Formspring)
A: Everyone I talk to who has had a baby recently says they miss little things about being pregnant. Although it’s becoming more and more challenging, I think what I’m really going to miss is dressing my body!

Here are some of the tips I would pass on to other moms-to-be:
…I felt most comfortable and fashionable in loose, comfortable jersey and cotton dresses, long tanks, tunics, and tees.
…The only real “maternity clothes” I ever bought were jeans, a white button-up shirt, a winter coat, and a “nice” dress. Everything else was just regular clothing.
…Invest in well-fitting tights and leggings because you can wear them with everything.
…Wear comfortable shoes when you’re at home so you can wear heels when you go out–I don’t have body image issues about being a short woman, but I think my calves and butt do look better when I’m not flat on my heels. Obviously, don’t do this if you can’t balance.
…Don’t hide the baby–I’d rather people see I was clearly pregnant than merely gaining weight.

…I got my “maternity formal” pieces in black jersey because I thought they’d provide a better foundation for accessories. I don’t normally wear black but during a time when my body is changing/leaking/growing/being gross so much I am glad I didn’t invest in something too expensive.
…I had also never been one to accessorize much, but the fun necklaces, purses, and big cuff bracelets really came out in the last few months.
…Those belly band things really came in handy early in pregnancy and let me wear my jeans for a longer time. (After I grew out of my jeans, I almost never wore maternity jeans.)
Do you have any suggestions to add?

today’s outfit and last-minute things to do
Posted on 21. Apr, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
This outfit is actually from last Saturday. I wanted to share it anyway because the red coat is my newest wardrobe addition and the bright color makes me SO happy. I also love the lining and that it has a hood.

The dress is from Express and I have had it for a few years. I love tunic dresses and as I’m late in my pregnancy I am appreciating them more and more.

My mom hates these boots. I think they are amazingly cool. Versatile and comfortable, and not too tight!

My panicky “my house is too messy” phase is over for a while, and now I’m in a panicky “there’s still so much I want to do alone while I still can!” phase. Today I plan to go out around the city, do all of my favorite fun things, take some good photos, and really hold onto those memories. Here are a few ideas.
Lunch at my favorite restaurant / Working out of a coffee shop / Look for furniture for the new coworking space / Sit down at the bookstore with a huge stack of magazines / Brainstorm ideas for birth announcements with my graphic design friends / Take my time browsing the clearance racks at TJ Maxx / Spray paint a boring knick-knack in my house / Get a pedicure!! I keep telling myself they are a waste of money but at this point I don’t care / Change my sheets / Arrange some fresh flowers
There are things to do for Alice, and things to do for me…I’ll address the former ones some other time.

my wedding… regrets and perspective (and today’s outfit)
Posted on 17. Apr, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
Last night, we went to the wedding of one of my old friends–the first one of the season! Although I work in the wedding industry and communicate with brides and grooms throughout the year, it’s easy to sort of forget that when I’m working “behind the scenes.” When I’m not in the midst of the planning or blotting my eyes at the ceremony.

When I got married two years ago, I have to say that it wasn’t an extremely emotional day. It was a JOYFUL and BUSY day, but except for the big party we had that night, it didn’t feel like an unusual day.
I woke up that morning in my bed that had kind of dirty sheets and stepped over piles of clothes in my messy room.
I took a shower in my dirty shower.
I said hi to my roommate and searched around my room for the wedding shoes that I had decorated.
I met my mom for lunch and we got our hair done together. She decided that she wanted to buy different shoes, so we went to the mall where I ran into several of our wedding guests (funny!).

I didn’t have a limo full of bridesmaids.
I didn’t get a mani-pedi or a massage.
I didn’t eat a nice dinner with my family or fiance. (I didn’t even eat at all–never was able to work my way over to the snacks!)
We walked to our hotel room after the wedding. I was barefoot and carried my shoes.
We didn’t go on a honeymoon and the next day we went back to our messy house, roommate, and three cats, and full-time jobs.

As more of our friends have gotten married over the last few years, I admit that sometimes I feel envious of their grand plans, spa days, and Caribbean cruise honeymoons. Or when I see photos of them joyfully walking out of the ring shop with a little teal bag, or at the bridal salon where a couch full of girlfriends gush about the bride’s dress choices, I wonder if I missed out on some wedding rites of passage that would have made the day better. Should I have done those things?

But the things I do remember most from my wedding day are the most important things.
I remember how my mom and I laughed over our sandwiches at lunch and had fun going to the mall on a whim because we weren’t tied down to a strict schedule. I remember improvising my hairstyle with my stylist, and deciding to add the black bow at the last minute which was just PERFECT. I remember sitting in the hotel room we rented with my best friend Kristal and painting our nails together on the bed an hour before the ceremony. I remember stepping into the party dress of my dreams, custom made just for me, and feeling like the best-dressed girl anywhere in the world. I remember standing on stage with Dave during our ceremony and feeling so astonished at how many of our friends were in attendance there to support us, and being surrounded by a cloud of well-wishes and kind words throughout the night. I remember the tears in Dave’s eyes when I heard the vows he had written for the first time.
The next day, I remember Dave surprising me and driving to the zoo instead of going right home–we spent all day walking around outside and laughing at animals. And I remember going back to work that Monday and feeling pure gratitude–for the magical weekend we had just experienced with all of our loved ones, and for the life we faced together full of shared goals and dreams.
There are lots of things maybe we “should” have done. But I feel so grateful for the moments from that day that I carry with me, the memories that have stayed freshest in my mind. We planned a huge party that marked the most important transition in our lives up until that point, and it was comforting to wake up the next day and have the wheels keep on turning, you know? We were the same happy couple.

today’s outfit

I’ve re-fallen in love with getting dressed now that the weather is getting nicer. Winter always feels so long.

This is not a maternity top–it’s actually a dress from Forever 21. But the back of it is pleated in a really cool way so it kind of opens up. I look forward to wearing it all summer.

Another note–after last week’s giveaway at Rockstar Diaries, I’ve received 37 orders for custom headbands! Wowie zowie! I finished two yesterday and six today, so I’m plugging away at it. If you are interested in ordering one too, shoot me an e-mail.

today’s outfit and week 36
Posted on 11. Apr, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.

These photos are from yesterday even though I’m basically wearing the same thing today to my cousin’s bridal shower. (Tis the season–showers every weekend!)

Yesterday was Alice’s baby shower hosted by my friends Kristal and Sarah. Our friends were there, my parents came, and I loved having all the guys included too. We had a few co-ed wedding showers and I knew that Dave wanted to be included in Alice’s Welcome to the World party! It’s weird to hang out with all of our friends–people we have known since our teen years–and look around the room to see that we’re all married, owning homes, having kids…when did that happen?!
And check out that cool framed graphic behind me–I’ll explain that in my next post!

For those of you keeping track, I feel the same as last week, but much more swollen and puffy. When I wake up in the morning and get out of bed, my feet feel like they’re stones wrapped in pillows. I keep expecting my energy and stamina to decrease, but I still have about the same amount of hustle. I have been out and about less lately and staying home working most days. Dave has been running most of the errands. I think he’s got his own “nesting” feelings as he has also started several new home improvement projects and feels the inexplicable need to own an axe, a circular saw, and a gigantic ladder (great Father’s Day gifts, I say).
