29 weeks and today’s outfit
Posted on 23. Feb, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.

I have looked all over Omaha and still can’t find a copy of that magazine. All the newsstands still have the old one out–so I guess I’ll just have to wait a bit longer. Right now I am watching Barnes and Noble, which is where Dave took these pictures of me tonight on our series of errand runs.

After I finished my income taxes (yay!) I picked Dave up from school. We went to the bookstore to find the magazine (nope), Target to get a new front door mat and end a weeks-long argument about whether leaving piles shoes by the door was “ugly” (yes), and to Flavors, my favorite Indian restaurant in Omaha. The owners of that place are so nice and they always remember what I want. I also think the baby either really hates or really likes Indian food because she wakes up INSTANTLY when I eat it.

I also think my nesting frenzy has started. I have become obsessed with getting the house just right because when Alice comes, I want to save any excess energy to work rather than clean. And I know I’ll be cleaning anyway. My first priority is just feeding and bonding and loving on the baby, then finishing orders and managing the dress line and moving into a new studio space (gasp!), then cleaning is last last last last on the list.
Last week I picked up awful cold from the high school–one of the negatives of working part-time there as a speech coach! Like the can’t-breathe, full-body-ache, stand-in-the-shower-all-day type of cold. Today I am finally starting to feel better and I started coughing which is always good–that means the end is near! Saturday is our district speech competition so I’ll need to be in top form as a coach. Then we get to see who goes on to state, and then the speech season is over. Whew.

Shirt: Target (Gilligan O’Malley? It’s a jammie shirt…whatevs)
Belt: Forever 21
Coat: Target (Xhilaration I think)
Leggings: Duo Maternity
Shoes: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Bag: BCBG
Watch: Target (Mossimo?)
Glasses: Oscar and Fitch
Oh! And hey! Thanks for the Shorty Award nominations in the past several months…I think I might have some good news about that soon!

weekend work.
Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.

Thinking about buying…
…another desktop computer.
…a crib done!
…a changing table. They are all so ugly to me. I really have my heart set on this one that fits over my crib, but isn’t it just paying $210 for a tray??
…those cute wrap boots from Toms Shoes. My mom thinks they are horrifying but I will refer you to her shoe preferences.
But thinking about saving for…
…Omaha Fashion Week costs.
…the family vacation of my dreams–three weeks in Berlin with side trips to Copenhagen, Moscow, and Amsterdam.
…private school.

Proud of…
…my speech kids who had awesome success this weekend at their tournament. Most of the kids went on to finals and although we didn’t have any first place finishers, I think they are starting to notice their hard work paying off.
…myself for shoveling our LONG-ASS sidewalk and driveway. It was an awesome workout and I got so sweaty I laid in the snow.
…my friend Steve who is an amazing freelance design hustler speaking at conferences and writing books. I wish he got more credit for his work here in Omaha–what an awesome resource and asset he is to our community.

Looking forward to…
…getting a pair of Toms Shoes today to decorate for a fundraiser at the YP Summit. Not sure what I’m going to do yet…can’t do felt flowers because felt on your shoes is gross. Maybe some faux bois embroidery.
…seeing my (totally pregnant) photoshoot and interview in the next issue of Omaha magazine. I think it comes out this week!
…being interviewed by Leo Biga for another local publication on Wednesday.

Reading…
…Nine easy Valentine’s Day projects on Brides.com.
…The thickness of napkins–a blog post from Contrast.ie about the importance of maintaining quality in all the little details.
…Jean Paul Gaultier comes to Target–I love how Target has changed the mainstream retail marketing and merchandising game.

What’s the best thing that happened to you this weekend?

I saw these Rosegold booties on Gilt and reloaded the page to be the first to order them–and then as soon as I put them in my cart, they were sold out. Drat!

Trying hard not to fall into the trap of buying tons of disposable plastic baby stuff–I am only buying the things I really need. A crib, a surface for changing diapers, a stroller, a car seat. What else do you consider absolute must-have big-ticket purchases?

I love these simple drawings from Krisatomic’s Daily Draw set on Flickr. This one is currently my desktop background.

Found via Paul Mathers, who puts together my favorite photo collections.

You should tell yourself this every day.

One of my favorite gifts to give is a single three-foot balloon. I hope there isn’t too much wind for my runway show this year because I want each model to carry a big armload of these! Found via Oh Joy!

Been so in love with this sheet set from Dwell. Just my colors!

These pretty Oscars look like pasta

Found via Sooner or Later

Working hard!

a few studio pics

I moved upstairs to be closer to the baby’s room and the sunshine. I LOVE it. There’s still a lot of stuff to move up–it’s probably 1/5th of the way done–but now I have enough to do work. It’s so wonderful.
This desk is a door on top of two sets of drawers.

Japanese masking tape, labels, and packaging tape

My favorite Stabilo Fineliner pens–I got a whole bunch of them from my grandma for Christmas!

A sneak peek at a new project for a video tutorial coming this month…

Good night. xo

22 weeks: pictures from new year’s eve
Posted on 04. Jan, 2010 by Princess Lasertron.
On New Year’s Eve we went to Goo, a dance party hosted by The Slowdown (where we got married in 2007).

I was going to wear my favorite Karta dress and I was elated that it still fit me, but after I got my hair and makeup done and Dave came to help me zip it up, the zipper split.
While Dave worked hard googling “split zipper” and trying to fix it, I moped for half an hour or so because I couldn’t find anything else that fit and was remotely formal. But I think I did a good job of prettying up this big tent-y dress from Ryu. And luckily it was comfortable.
Dress: Ryu
Belt: Kimchi Blue
Tights: Forever 21
Shoes: Etienne Aigner
The theme was “masquerade” so we went as kitties.

What did you do to ring in the new year? Quiet and relaxed or crazy and wild?

2009 wrapup
Posted on 31. Dec, 2009 by Princess Lasertron.
I loved 2009.
January: There’s no better way to start a new year than with a rejuvenating, relaxing vacation. Dave and I joined my grandpa, his wife, and some of our other family members for a family vacation in Puerto Vallarta.

January also brought me my first major magazine feature in Brides Local Magazines, which was available in local markets across the country.
February: February was a month for hard work–I loved the interview Polka Dot Bride did with me, and the Omaha City Weekly also ran a great story about my business and growth process. I also worked with so many awesome brides that month!

March: Forensics always takes up most of March! My high school speech kids took second place at our district competition and we took nine kids to state.
April: In April, my studio was photographed for Where Women Create magazine and I met the wonderful editor-in-chief Jo Packham who is one of the coolest ladies I know.

I also went to San Francisco to take Jordan Ferney’s letterpress class and meet Lilia Ahner who did a photoshoot with me (including the picture of me in the sidebar)!

May: Big Omaha! The little conference that could…

We also went to Chicago for the Country Living Women Entrepreneurs conference and our anniversary where we saw Shannel in a drag show and caught a Fischerspooner concert!

June: June was a more relaxing month. I took some time off because May was so strenuous.

July: The best 4th of July party ever, and Professor Lasertron’s family reunion in Mouse River, North Dakota.

August: The opening of Clean Plate at the Empty Room.

September: Well, in September we found out we were pregnant, found our new house, and went to Omaha Fashion Week.

October: Barcamp Omaha, a local tech/creative/entrepreneurial conference went off without a hitch.

I also traveled with my mom to Detroit for the American Sewing Expo, where Joi Mahon won the Passion for Fashion competition (she’s my partner working with me on the 2010 dress line!).

In October I re-launched this website with the help of Downs Design. Aaaand to top off Outstanding October, we moved into our house!

November: We found out about little Alice!

December: I just worked on finishing orders, tying up loose ends, preparing for the holidays and finishing a few media obligations for Spring 2010.
Do a picture recap! You will remember so many awesome things from 2009! If you do one, post it on your blog and share it in the comments.

around the house on christmas
Posted on 26. Dec, 2009 by Princess Lasertron.

We–and everyone else in the Omaha area–are totally snowed in again tonight! We got another six inches of snow in round two of the blizzard today but we are having a lot of fun. The city isn’t even going to send snowplows through Omaha until Sunday, I heard, so we might be stuck here until then.
The boys went out and played, doing flips into the soft six-foot snow drifts.
My dad and brother drove their truck, shovels and snow blower in tow, to dig my grandma out of her house so she could spend the day with us. It took a few hours but they made it!
Then we had the best brunch of my entire life. My mom made waffles with a really good yeast recipe–they were just crispy enough on the outside, and unbelievably melty and soft on the inside. I should have taken more food pictures!
Then we all opened our gifts–just our family and my grandma. It was perfect, my favorite people.
I received some amazingly thoughtful presents…lots of colorful new felt and buttons, several books about design, a doormat that says “Lasertron” for our house!
The gift I was most excited to give was a box of IdeaPaint, a really cool new whiteboard medium, to my packaging and design-obsessed mom. She loved it and I can’t wait to see what she paints!
Alice made out like a bandit, though. She got the Sleep Sheep from my grandma–I really wanted that for her–an adorable Shinzi Katoh poster (it is huge!), some cute clothes and books and a stuffed kitty. It’s so heartwarming to see how loved she already is by our family and all of our friends who checked in with us today.
At night we made our traditional family christmas dinner of homemade pizzas. Dave does the best job stretching out the dough.

Happy merry.

20 weeks and a christmas party
Posted on 20. Dec, 2009 by Princess Lasertron.
Saturday was the first day that I really felt well enough to be up and around, and we went to such a fun party that night at our friends Jon and Sarah’s. We drank, ate, talked, and mostly danced. It was good to see all of our friends. So many people were there packed into their cute little home!
We played around a little bit with my fujifilm instax…(a great gift!)

When I met Dave, he lived in a house with six roommates that rotated in and out. It seems like everyone I run into either lived with him at one point (like Erica on the right) or is married to someone who did (like Jenny in the middle).

Dave is privileged to have nine months of rides home.
We also took my 20-week picture at the party in front of the tree.
