these aren’t the droids you’re looking for…

It really is important to have your camera with you all the time. Because you might be at Target, when three police officers run in through the doors. Then look at you, confused, and say, “Is everything okay in here?” And you look around, also confused, and say “I think so…” And then suddenly, around the corner, come three stormtroopers and Boba Fett. And then the police officers start laughing. And then a Target employee comes over and says that a customer called the police on the stormtroopers, and everything was fine.

I asked them if they were part of a group or something, and they said “Nope, we’re just having fun.” Just hanging out in stormtrooper costumes. No big deal. I wanted to be like “Do you also pretend you are vampires and roll dice on the weekends? Or play World of Warcraft? Are you neutral evil? Because if you do….I have some friends you need to meet.”

But I didn’t say that.

I wish I knew who they were!!!

Then I went to see my best friend Kristal, who is my lone female bridal attendant, who lives right down the street from me. She had made cookies and wanted to give me a baggie of them to take home. They are really good, and her own recipe–really soft, gooey chocolate cookies with pecans and caramel inside. She also made me try a fiber tablet that she insisted tasted JUST LIKE CANDY AND I JUST HAVE TO TRY ONE. And she was right, they were delicious. Delicious cookies and fiber tabs.

And now that I think about it, she and her fiance were both playing World of Warcraft.

Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside-down, and I’d like to take a minute–just sit right there–I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air. No actually this is a story all about how Dave and I got engaged.

One cold February night, I was laying awake in bed at about 4am, and I decided that I was going to ask David to marry me. This of course is just as all of my most important and life-changing decisions are made–spontaneously, compulsively, in the middle of the night, while possibly under the influence of drugs or more than one can of Dr. Pepper.

Step one: get an engagement ring. This presented many questions and choices. What kind of metal? With or without a stone? How thick of a band (this was the most perplexing one)? What kind of finish? Any etchings or grooves? What is his ring size? Finding a band was also comparatively easy to what I would imagine being a man picking an engagement ring for a bride would be like. I found a jeweler through etsy named Kathryn Reichert. We had bought posey rings from her before that had Megan loves David/David loves Megan stamped on the insides. We had been wearing them for about a year, totally happy with the quality and comfort, so I went to her again to have an engagement ring made for Dave. I had “Megan loves David” engraved again, in a beautiful font, inside.

Of course the proposal had to be more than just giving a ring. I had lots of ideas. I ended up making a book that told a story about how we met and how I felt about him. I illustrated each page with drawings I made of us. Every time I went to work on it–hiding it when he came over to visit–I was just overwhelmed with nervousness, afraid that I would mess up the drawing and ruin the book. But it ended up perfect. That photo over there is the drawing I made of the first time we met–at a friend’s housewarming party.

I had planned to ask him to marry me during a walk in the park in Chicago later that year on a trip to see our favorite band, VNV Nation. What could be more perfect?

Well, when we got around to the trip (which was during his finals week when he was taking Organic Chemistry, I should mention), it was about 35 degrees and raining. It SUCKED. And we didn’t really bring enough warm things to wear. So the proposal in the park idea was out of the question. We went to our favorite restaurant there–The Chicago Diner, a vegan place–and I decided it was as good a moment as any and gave him the book, then gave him the ring. My hand sat on the book in my purse under the table for minutes (hours?), shaking, so nervous.

He cried. I cried. We got free cake. Then we went to the concert. Then we came home. Then he took the Organic Chemistry final.

So yeah I think that is the whole story. I hadn’t really even told it to my family. It was just the “hey, we are engaged now” phone call the next day, and their subsequent predictable emotions.

They are on board. We are excited. My mom is seriously the most amazing designer and creative mind that I know. Every link she sends me, every idea she tells me about, I love it all. We are throwing the best party ever.

One of my oldest friends, Cat Rocketship, has finally started selling her paintings and art on etsy. We met at science camp when we were in middle school, and I instantly liked her because of her funky style of dressing that looked like she found everything she was wearing on the street after it had A) rained and B) been run over by at least 67 semi trucks hauling rainbows and glitter. And her wacky sense of humor that I think influenced me a lot in my development as a person–I began to love surrounding myself with really unusual people. Anyway, homegirl is a handful.

The art she makes now is done by painting with oil paint on glass, and it is so uniquely Cat that when you see it 5 years from now in a gallery, you will still recognize her style. I can’t picture her doing anything else.

jokes by robots, for robots

I have loved reading McSweeney’s lists for yeeeears (Like, back when I was blogging about my teen angst and how no one else understands the deep sorrow that spawns from not getting invited to a birthday party/my parents not allowing me to use swear words…) and they have long been a reliable source of entertainment, even as humor trends change so quickly on the internet–All your base? Dancing baby? Hamster dance? Lolcats? O Rly owls? It’s like hyper-humor in here.

So anyway I dont like to just post copypasta all the time but with my well-documented love for robots and ongoing project to surgically replace all of my limbs with bionic metal weapons, I wanted to share some Jokes Made for Robots, by Robots:

1. “Waiter! Waiter! What’s this robot doing in my soup?”
“It looks like he’s performing human tasks twice as well, because he knows no fear or pain.”

2. Little Susie tosses a clock out the window.
A robot inquires, “Why did you do that?”
She replies, “I wanted to see time fly!”
The robot says, “Ah … A perfect subject for elimination,” and shoots her with a laser beam through the face.

3. Why was six afraid of seven?
Because seven was a robot.

you’re welcome.

In the last weekend I’ve gone to visit a couple of apartments because I’m moving to Dundee. I was dumb and didn’t take pictures of any of them, and I hate it because I want to look at a few places again because I have forgotten some details.

How inspiring is this picture from this month’s Brocade Home catalog?

I need to clean.
